Dear Sheriff Perez:

I have been trying to get information from your department for several month now through
Special Services but have not received even the courtesy of a reply.  Hence, I am sending this
message directly to you.

Mayor Ed Schock (Elgin) has implied that the Kane County Jail has a full time Immigration officer
(CAP) that screens all inmates.

I am sure ICE sends someone down there from time-to-time but I don't know the level of scrutiny
your inmates receive.  And I'm sure people are booked and released daily.

From the jail website there appear to be a large number of inmates with the potential of being
foreign-born.

I would like to know how frequently ICE reviews your inmate population and how that is
orchestrated.  Do you call them in?  Are they on a schedule?  Do they conduct a "sweep" of all
inmates (as was done a couple of times last year in LA and Orange Counties)?

Are the results of their reviews made public?  Do you have any data?

Also, some County jails indicate immigration status on their inmate profiles.  Some indicate an ICE
hold.  Does the Kane County jail plan to offer that information?

Please let me know as this is a vital issue in our area.

Sincerely,
Doug Heaton

Mr. Heaton,
Any issues concerning illegal aliens in our custody are addressed by our staff with ICE, not the
general public.  We are not a federal immigration enforcement agency, and your questions are
narrow in their scope and borderline insulting.  We comply with IDOC regulations and operate our
facility according to NIC standards.

Mr. Perez,
As a citizen I would think that the only ELECTED law enforcement official in the county would
understand what I am asking.  I want assurances that criminal aliens are being detected while in
your custody and that ICE is responding to your requests for detainer holds.

I expect some transparency from government agencies.

I'm not sure what is "borderline insulting" about that.

I fully understand what you are asking and your lack of respect and
threatening tone are obvious.  The state's attorney is also an elected
law enforcement official.  We honor all detainers and work in unison with
ice., so there are no issues of negligence or threats to public
safety.   I have nothing further to discuss with you.

Now, my AFLA friends, please send Sheriff Perez an email with your own
thoughts on the matter.  He needs to know that 100% screening is important
to us.  He needs to know why.

Click on this example right here in Aurora and read what happens when felons
aren't deported as the law directs.
